How to Cleanse Your Digestive System

The colon which is an important part of our digestive system is in part responsible for the passage and expelling of feces via our anus. It is long and is made up of bacteria, blood vessels, muscles and nerves. All these help in the elimination of waste from our precious bodies.

To effectively cleanse the colon, there are various options we must consider. Some are very effective, while others are not so effective. Because the colon is situated inside the body there is a high tendency that most of us have even forgotten that fact that it is there until we start having problem passing stool with lots of strain. The reason this occurs is due to various factors such as lack of exercise, lack of foods that are fiber rich, inadequate fluids in the colon etc.

Cleansing the colon therefore entails knowing some important things like what product is best for a specific type of person, what techniques are very effective, what supplements to use or what diet to be on etc.

You see there are various methods and we’ll be looking at each and every one of them in-depth.

Hydrotherapy
This is also popularly referred to as colon irrigation. In this method, purified water –sometimes mixed with minerals - re-infused into an individual through the anus to wash off all forms of waste both loose and hard, clinging and floating from the walls of the intestine and the colon. When the water is injected into the person, it causes the colon muscles to contract resulting in bowel movements. When this is carried out by an experienced personnel or professional, it is not harmful and in fact has high benefits. But when carried out by an inexperienced person, you're likely to end up developing what is called a megacolon which really means the distending of the colon to a larger size hence making it possible for the colon to take more fecal waste that it should normally do.

Also, when effectively carried out, you can be rest assured you might not need any other treatment for the next six months to one year. However, if you insist in it being done frequently, it would lead to an abuse of the whole process, result in muscle damaging, and nerve damage. It is also very expensive as it costs nothing less than $100 per treatment or per session with the doctor.

Cleansing the colon is an important way of keeping ourselves in top shape healthwise and physically. There is no need to keep carrying unnecessary load or toxic substances inside us as they can be fixed and eliminated if we only make up our minds to regularly go through a colon cleansing regimen.

Another acclaimed method that works well is known as organic colon cleansing. This method employs the use of oxygen gas in cleansing the colon of all toxic substances. This is also known as oxygen therapy.

It involves the increase of the current level of oxygen in the blood and the cells. This gives them the ability to do their jobs more effectively while also carrying out the detox exercise that it is needed for. According to recent studies, it is estimated that a sizable number of doctors and physicians are employing the use of oxygenated water in the treatment of their patients.

The oxygen treatment method is effective in improving the general health of an individual and more importantly, gets rid of all toxic substances resident in the colon. The reason this is successful is by the liquefaction of the hard, solid fecal impaction in the colon. The waste if not eliminated has a tendency to cause a general health breakdown as it hosts a myriad of harmful organisms whose source is the waste that is generated from the foods we consume. When the waste is eliminated, you can be sure that the colon and the body in general will start its total rebuilding into complete health.

The downside with this method however, is that it is expensive and cannot be readily afforded by those who do not have the resources. It is also a process that takes sometime as it takes time to melt the waste and then get it passed out.You can try this method if you are comfortable with it and feel you can take that long before you can get results. The results however are long lasting and very evident as you’ll notice a general improvement in your overall health and well being. You’ll find that with the waste eliminated, you’ll feel more alive and full of energy as you don’t have toxic substances clogging your system.

Another option that is also used these days is enemas. This method is not very effective in that it will only flush what is loose. Not what is hard and sticking to the walls of your colon. But if you decide you want to go with it, all you need is water and some minerals.

You can readily find this around and you can create the mixture yourself. All you need is to add about three drops of which ever mineral oil you choose – fennel, peppermint etc.- to the enema bag. This is pretty cumbersome and burdening. Asides this it doesn’t allow the easy movement of the individual around as you have to be very close to a toilet as soon as the bowel movement starts.

Another option is the use of laxatives. As much as possible, avoid this option as a colon cleansing method. This is not what you want to deal with as it is highly effective in only getting rid of constipation and even consistent use of it makes your bowels dependent on it for the required bowel movement that should come naturally.
Laxatives when taken consistently, also start leaving residues of chemical compounds in the colon and digestive tract as a whole. It is good to take for short term relief and treatment. But nothing more than that as it could get harmful when used excessively.

Green Tea Extract Increases Metabolism, May Aid in Weight Loss

There are two ways to lose weight -- either reduce energy intake, or increase energy expenditure. Because hypothyroidism -- even after treatment -- may reduce energy expenditure in some people, patients naturally are looking for options that can help safely help raise the metabolism.

In a study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a measure of metabolism), plus also had a significant effect on fat oxidation. While some of the effects were originally theorized to be due to the caffeine content of green tea, the researchers discovered that the tea actually has properties that go beyond those that would be explained by the caffeine.

The same amount of caffeine as was in the green tea, administered alone, failed to change energy expenditure in other studies. This led researchers to believe that there is some interaction going on with the active ingredients of green tea that promotes increased metabolism and fat oxidation.

The researchers indicated that their findings have substantial implications for weight control. A 4% overall increase in 24-hour energy expenditure was attributed to the green tea extract, however, the research found that the extra expenditure took place during the daytime. This led them to conclude that, since thermogenesis (the body's own rate of burning calories) contributes 8-10% of daily energy expenditure in a typical subject, that this 4% overall increase in energy expenditure due to the green tea actually translated to a 35-43% increase in daytime thermogenesis.

Green Tea Fights Fat

Need another healthy reason to drink green tea? Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, a new study shows that drinking green tea may also fight fat.

The study showed that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular tea.

Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and decreasing body fat.

The findings appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Green Tea: Fat Fighter?

Black tea, regular tea, and green tea come from the same Camellia sinensis plant. But unlike the other two varieties, green tea leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying.

Most teas contain large amounts of polyphenols, which are plant-based substances that have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties.

However, green tea is particularly rich in a type of polyphenols called catechins. These substances have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but recent research in animals show that catechins may also affect body fat accumulation and cholesterol levels.

In this study, researchers looked at the effects of catechins on body fat reduction and weight loss in a group of 35 Japanese men. The men had similar weights based on their BMI (body mass index, an indicator of body fat) and waist sizes.

The men were divided into two groups. For three months, the first group drank a bottle of regular tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins, and the other group drank a bottle of regular tea with 22 milligrams of catechins.

During this time, the men ate identical breakfasts and dinners and were instructed to control their calorie and fat intake at all times so that overall total diets were similar.

After three months, the study showed that the men who drank the green tea extract lost more weight (5.3 pounds vs. 2.9 pounds) and experienced a significantly greater decrease in BMI, waist size, and total body fat.

In addition, LDL "bad" cholesterol went down in the men who drank the green tea extract.

The catechin content varies by amount of green tea used and steeping time. But general recommendations, based on previous studies on the benefits of green tea, are at least 4 cups a day. Green tea extract supplements are also available.

Researchers say the results indicate that catechins in green tea not only help burn calories and lower LDL cholesterol but may also be able to mildly reduce body fat.

So before choosing which weight loss plan to follow, try reading these summaries about the most popular diet programs out today.

Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins. This weight loss program encourages high protein diet and a trim down on the carbs. One can feast on vegetables and meat but should fast on bread and pasta. One is also not restricted against fat intake so it is okay to pour in the salad dressing and freely spread on the butter. However, after the diet, one may find himself lacking on fiber and calcium yet high in fat. Intake of grains and fruits are also limited.

Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by Drs. Heller. This diet plan advocates low carbohyrate eating. Approves on eating meats, vegetables and fruits, dairy and grain products. however, warns against taking in too much carb. "Reward" meal can be too high on fats and saturated fats.

Choose to Lose by Dr. Goor. Restrains fat intake. One is given a "fat" budget and he is given the liberty on how to spend it. It does not pressure the individual to watch his carbohydrate intake. Eating meat and poultry as well as low-fat dairy and seafoods is okay. A go signal is also given on eating vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and pasta. This weight loss plan is fairly healthy, good amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as saturated fats. Eating vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, pasta, soups, salads and low-fat dairy is okay. Although limits protein sources to lean meat, pseafood and poultry. Although it is healthy by providing low amounts of saturated fats and rich amounts of vegetables and fruits, it is also low on calcium and limits lean protein sources.

Volumetrics. For low-density calorie eating. Recommends the same foodstuff as Pritkin but restricts fatty or dry foods like popcorn, pretzels and crackers. This plan is reasonably healthy given the high amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as being low in calorie density and saturated fats.

The Zone. Moderately low on the carbs yet moderately high on the proteins. Encourages low-fat protein foods like fish and chicken plus veggies, fruits and grains. It is also healthy but lacking in grains and calcium.

Weight Watchers. High carbohydrates, moderate on fats and proteins. A very healthy diet plan and very flexible too. it allows the dieter to plan his own meal rather than give him a set to follow.

If you're a citizen of the United States, you can buy anything you want across the border, including alcohol...but not prescription drugs. That's illegal.

Before I expound on this, let me state that I think that most prescription drugs are needless and most are detrimental to your health. From conversations I have had with our customers and prospective customers, it is clear that doctors give out prescriptions as if they were candy and that most patients do not question their doctor and do what ever he/she says, even taking 6, 8, 10, 12 different drugs a day, which I think is criminal!

How some of these people pay for their prescriptions without going bankrupt, I'll never know.

I know I'm being harsh but you need to listen to the stories I listen to almost every day from people who are overdosed with drugs and can't think, walk, or work, and who are not getting well, but getting worse.

If these drugs were so good, why is it that over a million people a year dye of heart disease alone every year? If the main stream medical profession and the drug companies are right, why do we heart disease altogether?

Fortunately there are nutritional programs available, if people will only follow them, which will enable these people to eventually get off their drugs and back on the road to good health.

Why buying prescription drugs in Canada is illegal, I do not know except that the FDA says it is about safety.

The FDA claims that they cannot insure the quality of the drugs that are purchased outside the U.S.

What BUNK! The majority of pills Americans pop every day are made in factories outside of the U.S. Pfizer alone has factories in 32 different countries. So if the drug your doctor told you that you need is made in Bangladesh, how is it safer if you pay $100 in the U.S. as opposed to paying only $50 in Canada for the same drug?

Does the extra $50 you pay in the U.S. increase the quality and safety of these drugs? No. But what it does do is increase the drug company's profits by 50%.

What it also does, because you are forced to buy at inflated prices in the U.S., is to allow the U.S. Government to rake in huge sums of money from corporate and sales taxes that the government levies on the drug industry.

This is a legalized rip-off perpetrated by the U.S. Government!

According to a recent CBS News report there is a small revolution starting against this FDA ruling and government rip-off. The Mayor of Springfield, Mass., for one, made a deal with a large Canadian pharmacy to supply the city's employees with prescription drugs at an estimated savings of $9 million a year! Look at the savings and this is only one small city in our country!

More recently a group called the Minnesota Seniors Federation crossed the border into Canada for the purpose of buying their prescription drugs, the only place these senior citizens can afford to buy their drugs without going bankrupt. They have been doing this since June of 2000.

Suddenly, on the return trip, the bus is pulled over of FDA officials who proceed to examine ever bag, every parcel and told them they had broken the law and warned them of the consequences if the action is repeated. Welcome to Gestapo land!

The bus trip these seniors took is called the RX Express and is paid for by Minnesota state senator Mark Dayton out of his own pocket.

Senator Dayton did send off a strong protest to the FDA and did get an apology, but the FDA got it's message across, Big Brother Is Watching You!

The best way to beat the system is to get on nutritional programs, get healthy, and stop taking drugs! That's what I've done. It works!

Yup, a drink or two of alcohol, such as beer, wine, etc., may help keep the doctor away when it comes to your heart.

The Sun . . . Good, Bad, or Indifferent?

Sunshine, Vitamin D, Calcium and Your Strong Bones

Since my elder daughter lost her thyroid and para-thyroids to cancer and her surgeon's carelessness, (but that's another story), I learned the importance of sunlight in relationship to vitamin D, calcium, and strong bones, all of which are interrelated.

Without her para-thyroids, her body cannot generate calcium from the food she eats and must take a high dose of a calcium supplement.

Calcium by itself would pass right through her body without the addition of a vitamin D supplement and the good old sun, the natural source for vitamin D.

Vitamin D makes calcium absorbable and so she takes D in supplement form or gets it from the sun, or does both. She'll be 60 this year and has strong bones!

In the interview, Dr. Holick also mentions that vitamin D plays a vital role in regulating cell growth -- and on our immune system's and cardiovascular health. Now that we know that, it is really interesting to read his studies on regional sun exposure and vitamin D levels.

In one such study, Dr. Holick discovered that 36 percent of young Boston-area adults were vitamin D deficient at the end of wintertime (not too surprising, right)...

But get this: They were still 11 percent vitamin D deficient at the END of summer!

Since these figures represented the youngest, most active adults (aged 18 to 29), the hiking, biking, roller-blading, and running demographic, you imagine what those
figures must be like for older adults with indoor jobs or a less outdoorsy lifestyle! Not good. But this condition is so easy -- and fun -- to remedy.

My recommendation is that you get outside a little every day -- especially if you live north of the Mason-Dixon line. Go ahead, play some golf or tennis, do a little gardening,
or take a stroll. It'll do you so much good on so many levels, believe me. Of course, supplemental vitamin D isn't a bad idea if you're sure that what you're taking is of good
quality, and highly absorbable.

I'll be 80 on May 17th and I have very strong bones. I get my vitamin D from the highly digestible multi-vitamins that I take, plus I get plenty of sunshine most everyday hiking with my dog Bear, he needs vitamin D too!

Nuts and Sunshine

No...it's not about eating nuts in the sun. It's two separate issues, both good for you.

Let's Go Nuts

Most people have limited their intake of nuts or don't eat them at all on bad advise from dieticians who have advised that nuts are full of fat and therefore fattening and not good for you. WRONG!

That's like saying if you eat sugar you'll become sweet and if you eat oil, you'll become oily.

Oil from nuts are natural fats and natural fats are good for you. Your body needs fats. If you don't give your body the natural fats it needs, it will make fat and the fat it makes is tough to get rid of.

Proof? Our country became the country of fat people when we went on the fat free diet craze.

Even Dr. Atkins with his famous diet went back to fats.

Research on the nutritional value of nuts is huge. Both the British Medical Journal and the Archives of Internal Medicine have published studies on the positive effects on nuts in our diets.

And as far back as 1993, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that women enrolled in the Iowa Women's Study who ate nuts on a regular basis had a 40 percent reduction in heart disease risk.

As for nuts making you fat, many studies have proven that nuts can actually help keep your waistline in check. Their fat content fills you up on much less then if you were to eat other foods like pretzels.

So go ahead and eat nuts. They are good for you. And choose the raw kind...they are the most nutritious!

Sunshine...Throwing Some Light On The Subject

For years the medical profession and sunscreen manufacturers have been threatening us with severe cancer for staying in the sun too long. We have been told to cover up, put on gobs of sunscreen, or stay out of the sun.

Now can you imagine the shock when a group of researchers discovered that sunlight wasn't the pure evil that they led us to believe? Can you imagine the reaction when they discovered that sunlight actually decreases the mortality rate in cases of colon, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer?

These conclusions came from a study that was conducted between 1984 and 1995 in 24 U.S. states by doctors from the National Cancer Institute and published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Deaths from ovarian, colon, breast (in women only), and prostate cancers were examined to determine the impact of sunlight on these diseases.

Contrary to conventional belief, they found that the sunniest areas had significantly lower death rates from each of the four types of cancer listed above.

People whose jobs required a great deal of sun exposure had lower rates of colon cancer mortality, and women in similar jobs with a great deal of sun exposure had fewer breast cancer deaths.

So maybe you should be eating nuts while basking in the sunshine after all! Just don't over do it...either one of them.

White Bread . . . The Awful Truth

Can white bread cause bodily damage and end lives prematurely? Here are some facts about white bread, and you be the judge.

The Swiss government has been aware of the dangers of eating white bread for decades and in order to get its populace to stop eating it, Switzerland has placed a tax on the purchase of white bread. The tax money is given to bakers to reduce the price of whole wheat bread to encourage people to switch.

The Canadian government passed a law prohibiting the “enrichment” of white bread with synthetic vitamins. Bread must contain the original vitamins found in the grain, not imitations.

White bread is “dead” bread. Nobody is telling us the truth about this and so called “enriched” flour.

Why is the color of white bread so white when the flour taken from wheat is not?

It’s because the flour used to make white bread is chemically bleached, just like you bleach your clothes. So when you are eating white bread, you are also eating residual chemical bleach.

Flour mills use different chemical bleaches, all of which are pretty bad. Here are a few of them: oxide of nitrogen, chlorine, chloride, nitrosyl and benzoyl peroxide mixed with various chemical salts.

One bleaching agent, chloride oxide, combined with whatever proteins are still left in the flour, produces alloxan. Alloxon is a poison and has been used to produce diabetes in laboratory animals. Chlorine oxide destroys the vital wheat germ oil. It will also shorten the flour’s shelf life and nurture insects.

Good Nutrition: You Won’t Find It In White Bread!

In the process of making flour white, half of the good unsaturated fatty acids, that are high in food value, are lost in the milling process alone, and virtually all the vitamin E is lost with the removal of wheat germ and bran. As a result, the remaining flour in the white bread you buy, contains only poor quality proteins and fattening starch.

But that is not the whole story as to the loss of nutrients. About 50% of all calcium, 70% of phosphorus, 80% iron, 98% magnesium, 75% manganese, 50% potassium, and 65% of copper is destroyed. If that is not bad enough, about 80% thiamin, 60% of riboflavin, 75% of niacin, 50% of pantothenic acid, and about 50% of Pyridoxine is also lost.

Scientific Study Has Confirmed What The Swiss Have Known For Years

These horrific numbers are the results of a study run by the University of California, College of Agriculture.

It is obvious, from what we have learned, that white bread should be avoided like the plague. Whole wheat, rye, and grain breads made with whole wheat flour is a better way to go. Let alone adults, feeding white bread to children aught to be a crime!

I have tried shopping for bread in supper markets and have given up after reading the labels, walking away in disgust. I now buy my bread in a health food store. It was either that or give up eating bread altogether.

For a more healthful way of life, always read the labels and never buy foods that contain artificial flavors, colors, bleached flour, preservatives, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.

Remember, it is not only how long you live, it’s how healthy you live.

What The Drug Companies Don't Want You To Know

Time after time I get asked the question about our arterial cleansing formula, “Is your product FDA approved?” “Have double blind studies been done?” , and when I say no, all we have to offer you is 20 years of successful use by a couple of hundred thousand people, they remain skeptical.

In the first place, nutritional supplements come under the DSHEA act of 1994 and do not need FDA approval, as they are not drugs.

Secondly let me tell you some things about the double blind studies run by the drug companies and the reliability of FDA approval.

The fact is that doctors, who are prescribing drug cures for you, rely on drug company published findings when making these decisions. Unfortunately, all the findings relating to those drugs are not published by the drug companies and information vital to the doctor’s making the right decision, are not available to him or her.

As an example; N.Y. State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, on June 2, 2004 charged pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith Kline with consumer fraud for failing to disclose negative information about its popular antidepressant drug, Paxil.

In five clinical trial double blind studies with teens and children, only one had positive findings. Glaxo published those findings implying that there was nothing else to say and this is what your doctor goes by.

The other four trials, which were never published, all had negative results suggesting that Paxil is no more effective than a placebo and worse, may even provoke suicidal thoughts in adolescents.

Four out of five clinical trials concluded that this is a dangerous drug yet not a hint of this negativity was reveled to the public!

This incidence of unpublished negative findings is not a rare case among pharmaceutical companies because the FDA doesn’t require them to report negative findings!

Another frightening example of unpublished drug information comes as a result of a Finish analysis of hormone replacement therapy and increased cardiovascular risk, found that the results of only 23 of 200 clinical trials were published. Think of that...177 negative conclusions packed away and hidden from the public!

And a study of a link between increased risk of congestive heart failure and the painkiller Vioxx took two years to find its way into print! How many people died unnecessarily in that two year time frame?

Dr. Joel Shuster, professor of clinical pharmacy at Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, says this problem with the pharmaceutical companies is more common then you think. Negative medical research doesn’t tend to get published.

That being the case, how can we trust that the drugs being prescribed are safe and effective? It’s obvious that under today’s method of oversight by the FDA, we can’t.

In real life studies, antidepressants appear to be risky business for young people.

Suicide risk remains a strong concern with all the antidepressants including Prozac, yet these drugs continue to be prescribed for millions of children and adolescents in the U.S.

The antidepressant controversy began in England last year when British regulators asked drug companies to provide unpublished data from clinical trials.

The data received from these unpublished trials suggested that Paxil and other antidepressants might cause suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents, a conclusion that was not available in published studies.

On the basis of this data, in December 2003, British regulators concluded that the risks in using antidepressants for young people outweighed the benefits.

Given this information, here’s what happen at the FDA. In February 2004, the drug safety analyst assigned to examine the unpublished drug company data was scheduled to present his negative conclusions at a public meeting. When senior FDA officials discovered this, they prohibited him from making the information public.

Fortunately the information was subsequently leaked to the press and has since sparked investigations in both the House and Senate. “You don’t just ask some one to clam up”, fumed Iowa Republican Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

With national and state regulators now on the case, questions about the safety of antidepressants are more likely to be resolved sooner than later. But what about other unpublished data?

The hope is that more civil and criminal suits are brought against drug companies based on hidden unpublished clinical trial data that exposes the whole rotten industry and spurs legislation that will force drug companies to register every clinical trial and to publish results pro and con, taking enforcement out of the hands of the FDA.

As you know, with my nutritional view point, I do not favor drugs, and with good reason. However, there are times when drugs become necessary, but not drugs that do more harm than good and are only marketed, with the FDA’s blessings, to fatten the coffers of the drug companies and the public be damned!
